ArtistsFineArtandDigital > joanjones  > Art > Mexico:
From the moment I arrived in Alamos, Sonora, 500 miles south of the Arizona border, I knew I would develop a series on life as I saw it in this charming, 18th century colonial, Mexican town in the foothills of the Sierra Madres. Here is a sampling of the pastel paintings done back home in my studio from the numerous sketches and photos I'd accumulated on site. For sizes and prices, email me from my home page. (Click first on joanjones, above, and then on email at the end of my biog.)

joanjones > "SUNDAY AT THE ALAMEDA": On Sundays, locals gather on this tree-laden plaza for all-day recreation. I was attracted by the people relaxing here while business as usual was conducted across the cobblestone street in colorfully trimmed, whitewashed, adobe-brick buildings. (This painting garnered an award at a 2003 juried show in Santa Barbara, CA.)

joanjones > "DOS AMIGOS": I spotted these two, obvious friends as they spent most of one Sunday afternoon talking over the affairs of the week. To me, they typify Alamos residents.
joanjones > "QUIET AFTERNOON": In the quiet of almost any afternoon, residents can be seen enjoying their coffee or drinks at cafes on the plaza. I was especially attracted to this one because through its arches can be seen activity on an adjacent side street.
joanjones > The sun shines brightly on the bougainvilla and the twosome seen here on their way to church.
joanjones > "Sunlit Market": On Sundays, the open-air market in Alamos bustles with activity. Sights, sounds and smells abound, and they all attracted this artist.
joanjones > Some of the passageways are very narrow throughout this small town.
joanjones > "EMILY'S STREET"
joanjones > "QUIET STREET": Its cobblestone streets were laid out in the 1800's and barely accommodate today's traffic. Still the charm of its rich past, like the colorful bougainvillea shown here, lives in Alamos and its residents today.
